Okinawa

  • Discover Japan’s 160 subtropical islands, known for their white-sand beaches and impressively clear night skies.
  • Join a stargazing tour in Iriomote-Ishigaki National Park, where you can observe the constellations against a backdrop of almost no light pollution.
  • Explore the 300,000-year-old limestone labyrinth of Gyokusendo Cave, and head above ground to discover the rest of the Okinawa World theme park.
  • See Okinawa from underwater at one of its best diving sites and uncover a sunken World War 2 vessel.

Hokkaido

  • In the winter, make the most of the cooler weather by heading to a ski resort to zip down the mountainside on skis or a snowboard.
  • Sink into the warm waters of Sapporo’s hot springs, which are said to have healing properties.
  • Enjoy a slice of Japan’s history in Hakodate, home to the Hakodate Jomon Culture Center which features a collection of historic ruins.

Kyushu

  • Visit the island found furthest south in Japan’s collection, known for its volcanic landscape and abundance of natural hot springs.
  • Get an education on Samurai at the Chiran Samurai Residences. These well-preserved buildings date back to the 19th century.
  • Admire – from a distance – smoke billowing from the top of Kagoshima volcano, one of country’s most active peaks.
  • Rent a boat and paddle along the Gokase River in Takachiho Gorge, made up of towering ancient columns covered in lush greenery.

Where the ancient meets the ultra-modern

Fly to Japan with British Airways and touchdown in Tokyo, a city with more Michelin-starred restaurants than any other in the world.

Experience the dazzling Akihabara, nicknamed the Electric Town, and ride the Shinkansen bullet train to the ancient capital of Kyoto, where there are over 2000 temples and shrines to explore. Stop off at Hakone along the way to unwind in the hot springs and then travel on to Osaka, Japan’s nightlife capital. If you’re up for an adventure then head to the summit of Mount Fuji, Japan’s highest mountain, which is snow-capped for five months of the year, or flop on the tropical beaches in Okinawa. For skiing, head to Nagano in the Japanese Alps.

Bigger than both London and New York City, Tokyo is the perfect place to begin a longer trip around Japan. While you can start your trip on Honshu Island, ticking off Kyoto, Kobe, Osaka, Nara, Hiroshima and Mount Fuji along the way, there are plenty of other must-visit spots further afield waiting to be discovered.
