Azure lagoons and flowers await
Start on the island of Sao Miguel. Soak in a hot spring in Furnas Valley, where volcanic sites sit alongside swimming spots and locals cook steaming cozido stew in the ground near the caldeiras. Plan to bathe surrounded by trailing greenery in the warm pools of Poca da Dona Beija – time your visit for sunset to look up at a hazy sky among the steam. Then spend the next day exploring the city of Ponta Delgada with its ornate churches, 16th Century fortress and 18th Century city gates.
The Azores is one of the first archipelagos certified as a sustainable destination, with the islands committed to protecting wildlife and resources , so make time to admire plenty of natural splendour. Hike at Lagoa de Fogo, the ‘Lake of Fire’, or stand on the ‘King’s View’ vantage point at Lagoa das Sete Cidades to stare down at green and blue twin lakes. When you want to sit back, find a sun chair on a beach or sip tea surrounded by verdant leaves at Gorreana tea plantation. Hire a car to get around and you won’t miss out on anything. The Azores holiday FAQs
- Sao Miguel is part of the eastern group of the Azores and is the largest of the archipelago’s nine islands. It’s home to lush vegetation, turquoise lagoons and breathtaking mountains, waterfalls and volcanic landscapes. Its capital, Ponta Delgada, displays an eclectic mix of the island’s past subtly merged with contemporary life. The historic city gates welcome you to whitewashed houses, ornate churches, forts, and an array of delightful shops and restaurants. In the old town, Praca de Goncalo Velho, the 16th Century Baroque church of St Sebastian has the tallest clock tower in Ponta Delgada.
- Terceira, otherwise known as the ‘purple island’ due to the flourishing hydrangeas that grow all over, is the third largest of the archipelago. It’s recognised for its forests, greenery and vivid houses. The island offers an array of incredible hikes, including up Monte Brasil, an extinct volcano. From its summit there are breathtaking views across the city of Angra do Heroismo, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that’s home to Baroque architecture, shops, and galleries, plus restaurants serving mouthwatering Portuguese delights. Try the Dona Amelia, a delicate pastry sweetened with cinnamon and molasses.
- Visit Terra Nostra Park, botanical gardens and thermal pools. Make sure you don’t wear your best swimsuit though, as the orange mineral water does not wash out.
- Sip tea at Gorreana, Sao Miguel’s famous tea estate.
- Pop to Pico for a zesty glass of wine made from grapes grown in a volcanic landscape.
- Explore the capital, Ponta Delgado, and sample traditional Portuguese delicacies at local market stalls.
- Spend a day at Vila Franca Islet, whose circular volcanic lagoon has calm waters that are ideal for swimming with children, or take a boat trip whale watching.
